TCE Contracting was tasked with the emergency replacement of a damaged sewer main beneath South Creek, crucial for the Windsor area’s infrastructure. The project involved directional drilling about 150 meters under South Creek while connecting the new main to the existing lines on either side. With no prior investigations or designs, TCE worked with consultants to design the main, assess geotechnical conditions, and implement shoring with jet grouting for soil stability. The major challenge was the 8-meter-deep excavation needed for the directional drilling and connection and excavating acid sulphate impacted soils that required treatment. TCE addressed this by using a sheet piling system with four layers of bracing and smaller excavators to navigate the tight space, ensuring safety and efficiency in completing the project. This project was a finalist in the Civil Contractors Federation 2024 earth awards.
